Materials checklist

  • Tub with lid and air holes
  • Shredded newspaper
  • Coir or soil
  • Compost worms
  • Veggie scraps
  • Spray bottle
  • Gloves

Step by step

  1. Soak and layer newspaper and soil in the tub.
  2. Gently add worms and observe with magnifiers.
  3. Discuss what worms can and can't eat.
  4. Add a few scraps and cover.
  5. Create a feeding and watering chart.

  • • Notice gentle handling and empathy — extend with worm 'caretaker' roles.
  • • Children curious about scraps? Run a two-food preference test.
