Trash-to-treasure workshop

Materials checklist

  • Clean milk cartons and bottles
  • String
  • Birdseed
  • Scissors
  • Masking tape
  • Paint and brushes
  • Cardboard tubes

Step by step

  1. Show examples and let children choose a project (feeder, pot, hanger).
  2. Children sketch a quick plan.
  3. Educators pre-cut hard openings; children decorate and assemble.
  4. Test feeders by hanging them outside.
  5. Share creations in a group circle.

Look for & extend

  • • Notice problem-solving when designs fail — extend with a 'redesign' challenge.
  • • Track which birds visit the feeders and start a bird-spotting chart.
