Recycling relay

Materials checklist

  • 3 labelled tubs (recycle, reuse, rubbish)
  • Clean mystery items (cans, cartons, paper, soft plastic)
  • Cones
  • Stopwatch
  • Local council recycling guide

Step by step

  1. Set up three sorting tubs at one end and teams behind cones at the other.
  2. Show the council guide and discuss one example for each tub.
  3. Each runner collects one item, sorts it, and tags the next teammate.
  4. Check tubs together — teams explain any tricky choices.
  5. Repeat with a harder 'mystery' round.

Look for & extend

  • • Notice who questions the rules (e.g. soft plastics). Extend by researching a local REDcycle-style drop-off.
  • • If children argue about items, set up an 'investigation table' to test materials next session.
